A Review - Emperor of Thorns - Mark Lawrence
Just to note that this is less a review, more a gushing declaration of love for a trilogy.
I've said it before, ill say it again and I'll keep saying it until I'm blue in the face. This series is phenomenal.Emperor of thorns follows Jorgs final ascension to the empire throne, with the usual writing style that sees a second story from 5 years previous running alongside it. I wasn't the biggest fan of this in the second book and found it in my opinion to be one of the books very few minor drawbacks, but in the third installment this works perfectly. As the second book leaves certain threads to be pulled at and contextualised the 'second story' is used for that purpose, its also helped by the addition of a small sub POV that allows us to see the progress of everyone's favourite Worm Lady Necromancer Chella and her Devil Angel Kai to provide a clean break between the two main timelines.
I described this book on twitter as being similar to a rafting ride, always making steady progression, never too slow, never too fast with the odd section of "Word rapids" thrown in there to add some real excitement. The added bonus to this little ride is that once you get to the end, and everyone's had a nice time, you take the emotional equivalent of a trip over the Niagra falls, and my god do you go through the emotions.
Anyone who follows my socials will know there's one other series that I am a die hard, almost zealot like fan of and this series may just be knocking it off the top spot.
I'm sure it doesn't need saying again but we'll done Mark, the past few months of reading have been some of my most enjoyable for a very long time.
