A Review - Prince of Thorns - Mark Lawrence

Firstly, its important to note that I am not being paid to write so gushingly over this book, it really is just phenomenal.

Mark Lawrence has achieved something special in the form of a book with such a twisted, psychotic, hateful, irredeemable protagonist with just that little bit of something about him (confidence, charisma, genius or a hope to see him eventually die, who knows?) that makes his story impossible to put down.

The supporting cast follow a similar vein or antiheroism with Jorg's band of road brothers each given a unique and meaningful identity, free of your usual fantasy clichés. It may be that we only get a glimpse of a characters persona as he meets his grim fate, however the glimpses Lawrence gives us in those moments is more than enough to make you care (care more than Jorg at least).

The pacing of this book is what I would describe as fast without being wasteful, Lawrence keeps the perfect amount of detail in there to progress the story without the feeling that something is missing, or the feeling that a chapter had been added as filler.

All in all this is a brilliant set up to the trilogy with plenty of room for both character and story progression. I will absolutely be throwing myself into the remainder of this series head first, I cannot wait to see more.
