A Review - The Silverblood Promise - James Logan

So what would happen if you took Gentleman Bastards, Assassins Creed, Indiana Jones and Cluedo and mixed them all up in a big old book pot. The Silverblood Promise is what happens.

You'll interpret that in your own way based on your personal tastes but I personally really enjoyed this book. The plot is interesting with very little in the way of filler or lulls. The world, or at least the city Logan writes within is well imagined and full of life, mystery and as yet unrevealed lore. Yes, as people have mentioned already this book is tropey, Lukan relies heavily on plot armour to escape his many certain death situations and a lot of his good fortune is handed to him in unrealistic ways, if you're the kind of reader who requires your magic and monsters books to be realistic then this isn't for you. If you can accept this book for what it is, which is a fun, well executed story in an interesting world then pick this up and give it a go.

A big, big strength for this book is its main cast of Characters, namely Lukan, Flea, The Scrivener and Lady Midnight. I had such a good time getting see Lukan and Flea's relationship blossom from "Get your hand out of my pocket before I cut another finger off" to the adopted brother/sister situation we end up with. Lady Midnight and The Scrivener are what I would class as the Main Supporting Cast, both deadly, powerful, intelligent and mysterious women, both of which I'm excited to see more of in James Logan's next book.

My one gripe with this book is that I didn't really care that much about the antagonists. I like someone I can hate, someone to really get behind some good old fashioned ill will for but in this book I found myself missing that. The book stands up well enough because of its mystery elements but I definitely thing stronger antagonists will help it as the curtain starts to lift on the threads of mystery Logan is weaving.

Overall, I can't complain, I undoubtedly enjoyed The Silverblood Promise and my main gripe is one of personal taste. Pick a copy up. Pick two up and give them to a friend. Pick three up if you have really long arms, just make sure you pay for them unless you're really fast or have a magic ring.
